Why Your IELTS Writing Is Stuck at Band 6.5—and What to Practise Next

What should I do if IELTS Writing stays at 6.5? Review your writing against the assessment criteria and identify repeated weaknesses.

If your IELTS Writing stays at 6.5, adding more difficult words may not solve the problem. The same score can arise from different weaknesses, so start by examining your own responses. A useful improvement plan identifies the recurring limitation and gives you a way to practise changing it.

Check whether you answer the whole question

Underline the instructions and identify every part that needs a response. A well-written paragraph can still be irrelevant if it answers a related question instead. Write a direct one-sentence answer before planning the essay, then check that each body paragraph supports it. For example, a question about free university for everyone requires reasoning about universal public funding. Explaining only that education improves employment may leave the funding issue unresolved. Ask yourself how the paragraph answers the precise proposal rather than the general topic.

Examine the development of your ideas

A paragraph often stalls when it makes several claims but explains none. Choose a central point, show the mechanism and explain the consequence. An example should clarify that reasoning, not merely repeat it with a person’s name or invented percentage. For related guidance, read How to Develop IELTS Essay Ideas Beyond One or Two Sentences.

Compare “Free tuition helps disadvantaged students” with an explanation that lower direct costs can make enrolment possible for capable applicants whose families cannot pay fees. You can then discuss why wider access matters. The second version gives the reader a connected argument rather than an unsupported assertion.

Review organisation and language together

Check whether paragraphs follow a sensible sequence and whether references are clear. Repeating connectors does not automatically create coherence. If every sentence begins with “Moreover”, the relationship between ideas may still be unclear.

Review recurring grammar errors that affect meaning or appear frequently. Focus on a small set, such as incomplete sentences, articles or subject–verb agreement. Learn useful word combinations in context instead of replacing accurate vocabulary with unfamiliar synonyms. Range is helpful when it remains controlled.

Use an evidence-based practice cycle

Choose one essay and obtain feedback that points to actual passages. Identify the two highest-priority changes, revise the answer and explain why the revision is better. Then attempt a different question without copying the corrected wording.

If the same weakness returns, isolate it. Practise planning relevant paragraphs before writing another complete essay, or edit a short passage for sentence boundaries. Full essays are useful for checking integration, but smaller drills can make the learning goal clearer.

Judge progress beyond a practice band

A preparation score is an estimate. Also look for more complete task coverage, better-developed arguments and fewer recurring errors under realistic timing. One strong rewrite does not establish consistent independent performance, so check fresh work over time.

Put it into practice

Take a recent essay and highlight each sentence that directly develops the answer. If large sections remain unmarked, examine relevance and explanation before spending more time replacing vocabulary.

Frequently asked questions

What makes IELTS writing feedback useful?

Useful feedback explains a recurring weakness, shows how to correct it and gives you a revision task. A band estimate without an explanation offers little direction for your next essay.

How can I develop an IELTS essay idea?

Explain why the point matters, show how it works and use a relevant example. Connect the example back to the argument instead of moving on immediately after mentioning it.

Can I acknowledge the other side in an opinion essay?

Yes. Explain why you still hold your stated position, or define the limits of your agreement. Make sure the introduction, body and conclusion express a consistent judgement.
